FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville woman died early Friday morning of a gunshot wound to her stomach, and her husband was taken to the hospital with other injuries, police said.

Officers were called to the home of Edna and James Strother at 215 Tiffany Court around 2:15 a.m.

Edna Strother, 72, and James Strother, 76, had lived in the home for decades, and James Strother was familiar to neighbors for his work with children.

Police did not say who did the shooting, but they said Edna Strother's death did not appear to be random.

Neighbors who live nearby said they have heard the couple argue in the past, but also say James Strother was involved in the community.
