MORRISVILLE, N.C. — An oil leak forced a pilot to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off from Raleigh-Durham International Airport Sunday morning, airport spokesman Bob Rogers said.

Staff discovered an oil leak in the engine of American Airlines flight 1645 just after taking off for Chicago at 8:12 a.m., Rogers said. Control problems scrapped the first attempt at an emergency landing, but the plane touched down safely on the second try about 20 minutes after takeoff.

Rogers said oil leaks aren't that uncommon, and the flight was scrapped as a precaution. None of the 138 passengers were injured.

An American Airlines spokesperson said the company was bringing in another plane for a rescheduled flight Sunday afternoon.
