Person County lottery winner: 'The ticket was glowing'

Posted July 25, 2013

— A Person County man who matched all five numbers in the July 23 Carolina Cash 5 drawing said Thursday that he will use more than $80,000 in winnings to save for his future and donate to his church.

Baxter Durham Jr., a textile engineer, learned of his win while at work Wednesday morning.

"It was like the ticket was glowing when I looked at it," Durham said in a statement. "I had five lines of numbers and the last line just seemed to be lit up. It didn't seem real at all."

Durham's winning ticket, which was worth $126,871 before taxes, was purchased at the Berea Mini Mart on U.S. Highway 158 West in Oxford. He said the money won't change much for him.

"I already have everything I need," he said.

These comments go to show that even the simplest story of a person with good luck and who tries to do the right thing by helping his church brings more negativity. Whatever happened to "if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all"?

Donating a portion of his gambling income to his church.....that's hilarious.

Someone ripped him off already. He's $2 short.

So according to the article he wins $126,871 but according to the giant check he won $126,869. I wonder what happened to that $2.

I wonder how many people WOULD give their lottery winnings to their church...good man

Sounds like a cool guy with the, "I already have everything I need." talk. That's the type of person I'd like to be.

"how can gambling be considered a sin, but a church raffle ticket isnt?"- not to mention Bingo!

  • NoRespect Jul 25, 2013

Uncle Baxter... way to go! I'll be up to see you this weekend.

Ok gambling is a sin does that meanthe churches should also stop taking donations from dirty politicans. I'm sure that will never happen. One sin carries no more weight than another. If you lie on your taxes to get a larger refund, that's a sin. Then you go to church and put a little extra in because you had a larger refund. That's no different than this guy. His sin is just that "his sin". He will have to answer for that but on the other hand he may be blessed for his actions in return.

BTW, Luv2Camp only the VP's at the lottery make the money. Dont lump all lottery employees into that comment. The lottery has a very poor pay scale for anyone who doesn't wear a VP hat. Those guys make over well $100K a year. Huge waste of state funds.

Puff, puff, pass...I'll have what he's having, LOL...

    Seriously...congrats, Mr. Durham!
