RED SPRINGS, N.C. — A woman was killed Thursday afternoon when police say a driver hit her, fled the scene and crashed into a nearby storefront in Red Springs.

Maggie Haynes, 39, was killed.

Gregory Sanchez, 52, was charged with driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, hit and run, felony death by motor vehicle and damage to real property. He was being held Thursday at the Robeson County jail under a $21,500 bond.

Sanchez's license was revoked due to previous DWI convictions, according to Red Springs Police Chief Ron Patterson.

Patterson said Haynes was walking on W. 4th Ave. when Sanchez, who was driving east, struck her and kept going. She died at the scene.

Less than a quarter mile away, Sanchez crashed into a Goody's clothing store. No one inside the store was injured.

He is due in court at 9 a.m. Friday.
