Pedestrian killed in Halifax County wreck

A 31-year-old Enfield man died early Saturday after being hit while walking in Sorietown Road near N.C. Highway 481, state Highway Patrol officials said.

ENFIELD, N.C. — A 31-year-old Enfield man died early Saturday after being hit while walking in Sorietown Road near N.C. Highway 481, state Highway Patrol officials said. 

Authorities said Robert Sears Jr. was walking to a friend's house near Dawson Elementary School when he was hit by a car around 6:30 a.m. 

Troopers said Toron Lekeith Coley, 30, was driving a 1996 Honda south on Sorietown Road when he hit Sears, who was walking in the middle of the road. Coley, who was driving 55 mph, wrecked into a ditch after hitting Sears, troopers said. 

Coley was charged with DUI in the wreck. No other information was released.
