Moore County teen hit, killed by car near Pinehurst

Posted July 25, 2013

— A 17-year-old from Southern Pines died early Thursday after being hit by a car in the 1900 block of U.S. Highway 15-501 near Pinehurst, state Highway Patrol officials said.

According to investigators, Timothy Jeremiah Reeder and a 15-year-old were walking in the roadway about 5 a.m. when Reeder was hit by a 2009 Nissan Altima.

William Gardner Mullen, 42, of Southern Pines, was the driver of the car. He was traveling northbound on U.S. 15-501 when he saw the teens and swerved, authorities said. Mullen was unable to avoid hitting Reeder.

Speed and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, and troopers said they do not anticipate filing charges against Mullen.

The oddest thing is that where I live, everyone walks on the road and and it might be two or three abreast and will not move to the side even when they know that an automobile is approaching them.

I've gotten to where I move over to the other lane to pass since I don't know what crazy move they might suddenly make.
