Parents concerned about overcrowded schools in western Wake County
Parents who live in western Wake County say they are worried about a proposal to place enrollment limits on some elementary schools, a plan that could lead to overcrowding at other schools.
Posted — UpdatedKerri Eklund has two children that attend Cary's Highcroft Elementary School, a school designated to receive over-flow students.
To handle the overflow, school officials want to build additional modular classrooms on the Highcroft campus, an idea that has parents concerned.
"I don't think there are any plans in the works for security camera to be monitoring these modulars on a 27/7 basis while the kids are in school," Eklund said. "So, as a mother of a student who could be out there in those modulars, I am very concerned."
School board member Susan Evans said the county is running behind in their efforts to build additional schools.
"We know we're running behind with building new facilities, from where we'd like to be, the recession didn't help us any with that," Evans explained.
Eklund and other parents want school board members to consider assigning new students to schools that have cap space.
The school board plans to discuss the issue at its upcoming meeting.
