Parents charged after Pitt infant found injured, malnourished

A couple faces child abuse charges after Pitt County authorities found their 5-month-old child had sustained serious injuries and was severely malnourished, authorities said Thursday.

GREENVILLE, N.C. — A couple faces child abuse charges after Pitt County authorities found their 5-month-old child had sustained serious injuries and was severely malnourished, authorities said Thursday.

The Pitt County Department of Social Services first reported the child's condition to authorities on Sept. 4, and DSS, the Pitt County Sheriff's Office and the Pitt County District Attorney's Office investigated before charges were filed Thursday.

Samuel McLaughlin, 21, of Ayden, and Kaylee Hutton, 21, of Vanceboro, were each charged with felony intentional child abuse inflicting serious physical injury and felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious physical injury. Both were being held in the Pitt County jail under $200,000 bond.
