CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A Marine standing guard at the Camp Lejeune main gate shot and killed another Marine at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday after discharging a M4 rifle.

Both were in a guard shack when the victim was shot in the chest. There was heavy traffic in the area when the shooting occurred.

It was unknown Tuesday night what led to the shooting.

“The base was never at a point where they were at lockdown,” said Nat Fahy, base spokesman. “They quickly had enough information at their disposal to make the determination that this was neither an act of terrorism nor an active shooter incident. It was isolated and it was quickly deescalated.”

The shooter stayed at the scene and is talking with investigators from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Tuesday's incident comes nearly a week after three soldiers were killed and 16 others injured after a soldier went on a shooting spree at Fort Hood in Texas.
