SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A 45-year-old Clayton man died late Friday after crashing his car into a tree on Swift Creek Road in Selma, authorities said.

According to investigators, George Rodriguez was on his way home at about 11:20 p.m. when he lost control of his 2008 GMC Yukon, left the roadway and struck a tree on the driver's side of the SUV.

Rodriguez was alive when emergency crews arrived on scene, but he died before being removed from the SUV, troopers said.

Investigators believe speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash.
