SANFORD, N.C. — A Sanford man was killed Wednesday morning in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 15/501 near the Chatham-Lee county line, authorities said.
Northbound traffic was stopped because of bridge construction at about 9:30 a.m., and a 2002 Buick slammed into the back of a 2006 Honda Civic, according to Sgt. Michael Baker of the State Highway Patrol. The impact forced the Civic into a 2007 Toyota SUV, he said.

The driver of the Civic William Smith Jr., 72, died in the crash. His passenger, David Riddle, 55, of Sanford, was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill with serious injuries.

Christine Sellers, 50, of West End, who was driving the SUV, was taken to Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford with minor injuries. Her 9-year-old son, Cadien Purvis, also was taken to the hospital.
The driver of the Buick, John Ussery, 73, of Southern Pines, wasn't injured in the crash.

Baker said the crash remains under investigation, but charges are pending.
