RAEFORD, N.C. — A 33-year-old man died early Saturday after being shot during an altercation with a Hoke County deputy, Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said.

According to a news release, deputies were investigating a report of a suspicious person near the intersection of Rockfish Road and N.C. Highway 401 Business at about 2:30 a.m. when they had an altercation with Sandy James McCall.

Sgt. Samuel Morant shot McCall during the altercation, and he died from his injuries, Peterkin said. Morant has worked for the Hoke County Sheriff's Office for 8 years.

No law enforcement officials were injured during the incident, Peterkin said.
