DURHAM, N.C. — A man was seriously injured early Friday after his car crashed into several trees and caught fire on East End Avenue near South Miami Boulevard, Durham police said.

According to investigators, the man was speeding in his Acura at about 2:15 a.m. when he lost control, drifted across the road and struck trees along the north side of the road.

The impact caused the vehicle to break into several pieces and catch fire. The man was somehow able to get free from the vehicle, and emergency personnel found him in the woods near the crash.

Authorities said the man had two broken arms, an injury to his right knee and numerous facial lacerations. He was in critical condition early Friday.

The man has been charged with DWI, no operator's license and careless and reckless driving.

East End Avenue was closed for about two hours while authorities investigated the wreck and crews cleared the road.
