One dies in Wilson County wreck

— A man died in a single-vehicle accident early Thursday in Elm City, authorities said.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a 30-year-old man was speeding on South Elm City Road near Upchurch Road when he lost control and slammed into a utility pole. The crash happened shortly after 1 a.m.

The man’s name was not immediately released. No other information was available.

    State troopers say a Wilson man died early Thursday when his car ran off the road and smashed into a utility pole outside Elm City.

    The impact killed 30-year-old Craig Gause of 905 Grove St. and snapped the pole at its wooden base, said Trooper Charles Purvis of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The crash happened at 1:12 a.m. on the 2100 block of Elm City Road.

    Family members said Gause was an aspiring rapper who performed under the name Steelo. He was remembered Thursday as a devoted father to his 2-year-old daughter, JaNya, and fiancée Maria Allday’s 7-year-old son, Mehki.

    "He was definitely a role model," said cousin Tariq Reddick, who grew up with Gause in New York and New Jersey. "He used to pick them up from school daily when she had to work."

    Gause was driving a 2008 Kia Optima sedan southbound on Elm City Road. Purvis said Gause ran off the road to the left, overcorrected and veered off the road on the right-hand side, crashing into a utility pole.
