One dead in Edgecombe house fire

One person died late Thursday in a house fire near Speed, authorities said Friday.

SPEED, N.C. — One person died late Thursday in a house fire near Speed, authorities said Friday.

A passing motorist called 911 shortly after 9 p.m. to report a house fire at 2282 Acorn Hill Road, about a mile outside of Speed, Edgecombe County Fire Marshal Butch Beach said.

By the time firefighters from the Speed and Leggett volunteer fire departments arrived, flames engulfed the house, Beach said.

One person was found dead inside, but the person's identity hasn't been released.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
