Deputies: Daughter kills mother in Durham tire shop shooting
The co-owner of a Durham tire shop was shot and killed by her daughter inside the business Monday afternoon - the same location of a 2012 shooting that left the victim's husband wounded, the Durham County Sheriff's Office said.
Posted — UpdatedBetty Tice Turner, 62, was killed inside J.T. Tire on East Geer Street in Durham. Her daughter, Rebekah Turner Maxwell, 38, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, deputies said. Maxwell remained in the Durham County jail Monday night under no bond.
Investigators did not say what led to the shooting.
John Turner survived the shooting. Terry Shaw, an employee, and Javier Ramirez, a customer, were also shot.
Store employee Naomi Wright Turner, 65, and Abdelgadir Mergany Abdelganir, 32, were killed. Abdelganir was a driver for Durham’s Best Cab Company who stopped in to fix a tire.
Stephanie Byrd, whose father worked at the business for years, remembered Betty Turner as someone who was always available.
"A good person. Holidays she would make our family cakes and deserts," she said. "She was always there for my family when we needed her."
