TARBORO, N.C. — Authorities found a gun stolen from a car parked on the campus of Duke University after a car chase last week in Edgecombe County.

Edgecombe County sheriff's deputies and Tarboro police officers saw a person behaving suspiciously on Nov. 22 in east Tarboro. Authorities said the driver sped away in a car and ran several stop signs.

Deputies stopped the person on U.S. Highway 64 in Rocky Mount and removed the driver, who was identified as Khalil Wilkins. Officials said Wilkins had a gun, which had been reported stolen from a visitor whose vehicle was broken into while it was parked on Duke's campus. A Duke spokesman said the gun was reported stolen in June 2017.

Authorities also found 90 bags of heroin, police said.

Wilkins was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen gun and trafficking heroin, among other charges. He was booked in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $900,000 bond.
