WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Raleigh man was hospitalized Monday after, police say, he shot a Winston-Salem police officer while fleeing a traffic stop and was wounded with his own gun.

A spokesman for the Winston-Salem Police Department said Officer Nicholas Powell stopped a white Nissan Sentra for speeding at about 2 a.m. The car then drove off, with Powell clinging to the side of the vehicle, police said.

After about a quarter-mile, the car stopped, and Powell struggled with one of the three people in the vehicle, police said. The man's gun went off, wounding both Powell and the man.

Police identified the man as Gary Giovon Lynn, 26, of Raleigh.

Neither Lynn's nor Powell's injuries are life-threatening, police said.

Eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 Business in Winston-Salem near Lowery Street were closed early Monday.
