Officer shoots man at Raleigh business while responding to 911 call

Investigators would not say what led to the shooting, but the situation appears to have started shortly before 8:30 a.m. when a woman at 3824 Barrett Drive, called 911 reporting that a "really, really big" man was hitting a "really small" man.

"We need somebody in this Suite 200 right now," the caller said. "There's a patient attacking one of our staff members."

According to the call, the woman was at a business called Family Preservation Services. According to its website, it offers counseling and social services.

The caller was unsure if the man had a weapon.

Dozens of officers, as well as administrative staff with the Raleigh Police Department, later converged on the area, where nearby roads were cordoned by police tape for several hours, and people in the area were told to stay inside.

Marcel Leroy Jordan, 33, was taken to WakeMed, where he underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon. He was last listed in critical condition early Thursday.

Sources told WRAL News that Jordan had a pair of scissors and charged at the officer when she showed up at the office.

The officer's name has not been released. More information about what happened could be provided next week in a preliminary report to Raleigh's city manager. That's due within five business days.

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Raleigh Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit are investigating the case – a standard procedure in shootings involving police officers.

Renee Overton was working alone in her office on the third floor Wednesday morning when the shooting happened.

"I was just so flabbergasted and thought, 'What is going on?'" she said.

Overton said she immediately locked her office door and stayed inside for hours.

"The building is surrounded by all these police cars. There's yellow tape everywhere, so I look out the window and think, 'Oh my gosh!'"

She said she is just glad the situation was not worse.

"I was just thanking the Lord that He was looking after everything," she said.
