FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Residents of a Fuquay-Varina nursing home are still not allowed to back in, a week after severe storms swept through central North Carolina.

Administrators have not been able to say when 63 residents, who were evacuated Friday evening a week ago, will be able to return to Brighton Manor Nursing Home on Sunset Drive.

A tree punched a hole in the roof, parts of the building flooded, and a small fire in an electrical panel broke out. When the facility lost power, the backup generator did not immediately come on, prompting administrators to order the evacuation.

Fire and emergency-medical personnel took the residents to other nursing facilities throughout the area.

State inspectors are investigating why the back-up generator did not immediately turn on.
