Two singers with North Carolina ties will be moving on to the live rounds of NBC’s singing competition “The Voice” after surviving the knockout rounds Monday night.

Chapel Hill native Rayshun Lamarr moved on after his performance of “Fallin’” by Alicia Keys while Sanford native Britton Buchanan was saved from elimination by his performance of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.”

“This song kind of came from his love for New York and of course Billy Joel, he is a Billy Joel fan. If he doesn’t end up in New York at some point in his life, I would be surprised,” Buchanan’s mother, Shannon Buchanan, said.

Britton Buchanan’s family and friends celebrated his success Monday night at a watch party to show their support and cheer him on.

“I knew God has something very special planned for Britton. I didn’t know it would be this,” Shannon Buchanan said.

Britton Buchanan’s family said he was never a fan of sports, but found his niche with music.

“Sports did not work for Britton. He would pick flowers in the outfield, he would bring them in to me. I was worried he was going to get hit by a ball,” Shannon Buchanan said.

“He discovered the internet and that he could go online and find songs and see how to play them and that’s where it started. From the age of 12 on, he was constantly playing the guitar,” Britton’s father, Todd Buchanan, said.

Family members refer to Britton Buchanan as an old soul and joke that he should have been born in the 1970s or 1980s. He’s always been drawn to classic rock, admiring artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne.

Now, family members are rooting for him to become the winner of “The Voice” and make a name for himself in the music industry.

“If you knew the kind of person Britton was, that to me, I’m much more proud of that because he’s just a good kid and I’m glad that the world gets to see all of that,” Shannon Buchanan said.
