Reports: Passengers killed in Wake Forest crash had not been drinking

Toxicology reports on two teens killed in a June 5 car crash in Wake Forest confirm that they did not have alcohol or drugs in their systems.

An investigation of the crash that killed Lane Meyer, 16, of Wake Forest, Matt Speight, 17, of Raleigh, and driver Austin Leonard Flowers, 16, of Wake Forest, found that Flowers' Dodge Challenger was going more than 120 mph when he lost control at the intersection of Old Pearce and Zebulon roads and slammed into a tree.

State troopers said at the time of the crash that they suspected speed, not impairment, was the key contributor in the crash. The toxicology test released Tuesday confirms that neither Meyer nor Speight had been drinking. A report on Flowers' condition has not yet been released.

Brenden Pearce, 16, of Wake Forest, was also in the car. He suffered serious injuries, but was released from the hospital Saturday, according to family members.

RIP boys! Prayers to the families.

I think just due to the majority of accidents where young people are involved there has been the factor of drinking or drugs. This was not the case.

As some have already said it does not matter that they had just left church. There are adults who leave church and go home pop a top.

May the families know that thoughts and prayers continue to hold them up.

Good lord! I have never even driven over 100 in my life! I can't imagine going 120 and feeling like that was a safe speed for me or my passengers.

Let's just continue to keep these families in our thoughts, they will never heal from this completely.

Everyone needs to stop talking bad about the boys because yes, they made a bad decision and unfortunately they faced the ultimate consequence but that doesn't give anyone the right to bash them or their families. nobody knows what was going on inside the car at the time and nobody can assume anything. They were ALL great kids and I know this for a fact. I wish people would just leave it alone. These boys are GREATLY missed and always will be and I don't feel it's appropriate (and neither do the friends or families) to talk this way about people that have just died!

Its so disgusting for wral to consider this news. These families are going through a hard time.my all our prayers be with them drcurrin June 29, 2011 9:16 a.m.  Ignore  Report abuse

Don't blame WRAL. Blame the kid. Good grief!!
