Police find DNA match for Burlington rape suspect
Burlington police said they've arrested a suspect whose DNA matches that left behind by a man who broke into a woman's home and raped her last October.
Posted — UpdatedXavier Sheriff Slade, 35, of 1012 S. Main St., faces charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, larceny after breaking and entering and filing a false police report.
A woman told police that a man broke into her home early Oct. 14, 2010, and tried to assault her. Police said she stabbed him in the stomach with a small pocket knife, but he managed to take away the knife, force her further into the home and rape her. He took her cell phone and knife when he left.
Slade came to Alamance Regional Medical Center later the same day to be treated for a stab wound to his stomach, police said. He told police that a man attacked him on a street earlier that day.
Police got a DNA sample from Slade and sent it to the State Bureau of Investigation to be compared with DNA collected from the sexual assault victim. Police said the SBI notified them Monday that the DNA samples matched.
Slade was placed in the Alamance County jail under a $700,000 secured bond.
He has 27 convictions dating to 1995 and has served seven jail sentences totaling four years, according to state Department of Correction records.
His convictions include assault on a child and a female, arson, burglary and numerous counts of dealing drugs, records show.
