NASH COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to a five-car wreck Saturday, after a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

David Orlando Mendoza, 18, of Bailey, was traveling north in his 2004 Dodge pickup truck on Interstate 95 in Nash County near mile marker 133. Troopers said he fell asleep, crossed the median and struck a southbound car pulling a trailer. The driver of the second car then lost control and crossed the median back into the northbound lanes.

The trailer disconnected from the car and struck three additional vehicles.

No one was seriously injured.

Mendoza was charged with careless and reckless driving, and driving while license suspended. Speed and alcohol were not factors, troopers said.
