DUNN, N.C. — Gene Mullins is living "a parent's worst nightmare," as he mourns the loss of his 20-year-old son Randy, who died in a car wreck Saturday night.

"You couldn't have asked for a better son," Mullins said.

Mullins said his son was driving a friend's car when he lost control and crashed into a tree around 10 p.m. Dunn police responded to the scene, on Meadowlark Road near Dunn Middle School, where they found Randy Mullins dead.

His three passengers – Nick Smith, Kaitlyn Ward and Jenna Cass – were also injured. Cass was listed in serious condition, while Smith and Ward were in good condition Monday morning at UNC Hospitals.

Mullins said his son graduated last year from Triton High School in Erwin and planned to become a motorcycle mechanic. He struggled to hold back tears as family and friends gathered at the Mullins' home in Coats Sunday.

"Nobody can get prepared for something like this," Mullins said. "You always hear, 'Oh, it will never happen to us.'"

Dunn police said they are still investigating the cause of the wreck and ask anyone with information to come forward.
