HENDERSON, N.C. — Vance County authorities charged a man with shooting his roommate in the head early Thursday.

Fred Holden, 67, of 42 N.C. Highway 39 Loop Road, Lot 44, was charged with attempted murder. He was being held without bond in the Vance County Jail.

Deputies responded to a report of a shooting at about 1 a.m. Thursday and found Rodney Kearney, 36, of the same address, with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. He had been shot with a small-caliber rifle, authorities said.

Paramedics took Kearney to Maria Parham Medical Center, and he was then airlifted to Duke University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Investigators haven't determined the motive for the shooting.
