Goldsboro police charged the driver of a Greyhound bus in a wreck that killed a 62-year-old pickup truck driver Saturday afternoon.

Police said the bus had a red light while going west on U.S. Highway 70/West Grantham Street, approaching the Interstate 795 juncture, shortly before 4 p.m. The bus struck a Mazda pickup truck that had entered the intersection from the I-795 off-ramp.

Leroy James Scofield, of Thomasville, was ejected from the pickup, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two bus passengers were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The bus driver, Catherine Lytch, of Sumter, S.C., was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to stop for a red light.

Twenty-six passengers were on board the Greyhound bus.

An investigation determined Scofield was not wearing a seat belt.
