Durham police arrest suspect in hit and run

Durham, N.C. — Durham police arrested the driver they suspect in a Wednesday hit-and-run Hillsborough Road.

Cornelius Lee Baldwin, 26, of 1404-B Liberty St. in Durham is charged with felony hit and run resulting in personal injury, felony fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle and reckless driving

Police said Baldwin led a Durham officer in a high-speed chase from N.C. Highway 147 onto U.S. Highway 15/501 and then onto Hillsborough Road where he hit a car being driven by Walter B. Paschall, 84, of 5143 Old Hillsborough Road.

After the collision, police said Baldwin fled the scene on foot, heading toward the Hillandale Golf Course.

Paschall suffered a broken pelvis and two punctured lungs when his vehicle was hit on the passenger side. He was taken to Duke Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition Thursday afternoon.

I am the only granddaughter of the wonderful man who was hit by this menace to society. Thank you to all who have prayed for him and we can't adequately express our gratitude to the woman who helped him from his car. This coward almost killed my grandpa and doesn't deserve the chance to ever get out of jail. We don't understand the decision to give him bail, when he's proven he WILL RUN. Can you say flight risk? If this had been the judge's family member would he have bail? My grandfather is 84 and has NEVER been in an accident or had a ticket. He is a meticulous driver and the most wonderful man. What kind of pathetic loser hits an elderly man and runs? My grandpa has a long road to recovery but HE WILL fight and get better. This man almost killed my grandpa and should be charged with attempted murder. Please continue to pray for my grandpa and his continued improvement and thank you to all who have been praying for him.

Coneelus wont do nuthing like that!! he is a good man!! i knoweded hims all my life!! he recently found god!! he had a tough upbringing! his daddy wont around!! this has to be a false accusation! racial profiling too!!

GREAT JOB identifying this guy - too bad he will not have to put up with any of the pain and suffering this poor elderly gentleman has and is going to have to put up with. The suspects description fits the common pattern of most violent criminals.
