A dozen students were involved in a gang-related fight at Smithfield-Selma Senior High School early Monday, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the fight, which occurred at about 7:15 a.m. Monday, authorities said.

Six students – four boys and two girls – were charged with simple affray and disorderly conduct and were being held Monday afternoon in the Johnston County Jail under $5,000 bonds. Six other students involved fled the school campus after the fight, and warrants were issued for their arrests, authorities said.

I am from the country and we had zero gang problems in HS, even though we probably had more poverty than this school. Of course we had less than 1% minority enrollement also (this was 15 years ago before the Mexicans invaded the mountains), but I am sure that had nothing to do with it.

As a 2008 graduate from SSS, and as the daughter of one of its teachers, I resent when people bash SSS/Johnston County. There is no denying that SSS is facing some major issues, but compared to how it was my freshman year, it has improved greatly. Mr. Jacobs has an extremely challenging job and many of the teachers work tirelessly in improving the lives of all their students. I am currently in my second semester at UNC-Chapel Hill, and without some of the teachers I had at SSS, I would not be able to be here.

Every school is plagued with issues that are often out of their control. Don't bash the school. They are doing everything they can with the resources that they have. If it really bothers you (I doubt it does...I am guessing many of you just wanted to anonymously bash something), go volunteer your time at SSS. They always need proctors, senior project judges, etc. etc.

These children should be sent (by a judge) to a "wilderness camp". My grandson has spent almost a year at one and it has completely changed his attitude. He has had structure and consistancy in his life. He was ordered by a judge (NOT in Johnston Co) to attend. He attended the alternative school (which is a "joke")in Smithfield and it did him more harm than good. Maybe the Board of Education and sheriff's department or court system should get together and set up a school for these children.

They should not be allowed back on school property if convicted.

"...blame the parents.... blame the school... "

heck, I say blame the kids - at high school these kids are old enough to know right from wrong and they are old enough to endure the consequences.. No one ever wants to put the blame on the one responsible... that.... should be a subject to be taught in school... but then maybe not because schools are govt run and our govt tends to redirect blame time and time again....
