Raleigh police arrested a registered sex offender Friday for going on the campus of Athens Drive High School.

Marcus Jermaine Johnson, 30, of 1312 Arbor Greene Drive, Garner, was on the campus Wednesday, according to the arrest warrant. Johnson faces charges of being a sex offender unlawfully on the premises intended for the care of minors.

Wake County Public School System spokesman Greg Thomas said that Johnson, an alum, wanted to volunteer at the school. When he signed in using the school's computer system, however, it flagged his name as someone who was supposed to be there. Raleigh police followed up and filed the charge, Thomas said.

Johnson was being held in the Wake County Jail under a $75,000 bond Monday night.

Johnson was convicted of incest with a near relative, which is a second-degree sexual offense, in 2005 and of statutory rape, in which he was at least 6 years older than the victim, in 1998, according to the North Carolina Department of Correction.

He was given probation for both convictions but served three months for violating his probation from the incest conviction. He was released on Dec. 25.

Johnson also has convictions for common-law robbery, larceny and assault on a policeman.

Wondering about the circumstances about who noticed him being there, how did they know he shouldn't be there, who reported him, how long after he was there was he arrested, and where physically was he arrested? I'm sure people on the Sex Offenders Registry go many places they aren't supposed to be. But someone has to know they shouldn't be there and report them. I'm sure this happens many times more than it is reported.

Let'see...robbery, larceny, assault on an officer, incest, rape, prohbation violation...and that's just what he's gotten caught for. Now he's on a school campus. Once again the NC legal system lets down the public. Those responsible should be ashamed of themselves. Problem is they're not because they don't care. They're just getting up every morning and going to work to draw their paycheck. Where's the accountibility?

This is the criminal justice system at work here. People get away with a lot until they kill someone. Let's keep these people behind bars.

Probation for those two convictions ???? I'm betting on him getting probation again. Isn't that sad.
