DOT to halt highway construction over holidays
The state Department of Transportation will suspend most road construction that could affect travel over the holidays to help ease traffic delays and make driving conditions safer.

Major construction projects along interstate and U.S. highways across the state will be suspended from 4 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Jan. 5.
One southbound lane on Interstate 85 between mile markers 206 and 214 in Vance County will remain closed for repaving. Southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane while the DOT removes concrete barriers and replaces striping, which is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Also, one of three lanes will be closed on northbound and southbound I-85 at the interchange with N.C. Highway 62 in Guilford County because of construction on the U.S. Highway 311 Bypass.
DOT officials said that, even though workers might not be present in the majority of work zones, drivers might still encounter narrowed lanes and traffic shifts. The penalty for speeding through a marked work zone is $250.
