FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities closed Cumberland County's main library after an early morning fire Saturday.

Firefighters responding to an alarm discovered the fire in the basement of Cumberland County Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden St. They contained the fire to the basement and quickly put it out, but smoke escaped throughout the building.

Library Director Jody Risacher said the fire gutted an officer the ground floor and distributed soot throughout parts of the building. There was no permanent damage to any public areas of the library.

Headquarters Library will be closed indefinitely, Risacher said.

Books can be returned to any of the county's six branch libraries, which remained open.
