The City Plaza proposed for downtown Raleigh is moving closer to reality, City Manager Russell Allen said Friday.

Allen has been negotiating an easement with the owners of property at the south end of Fayetteville Street for more than a year, and he said he hopes to have one hammered out in time to present to the City Council on Tuesday.

The plaza was supposed to open at the same time as the new convention center, in September, but delays with the easement pushed back that date by at least six months.

Once open, the area near the center and the new Marriott hotel could host concerts at night and shopping during the day.

Why is it so expensive to live downtown? I fail to see justification for it. Where is the theme park and waterfront? They are trying to make downtown Raleigh something it is not.

Where are the synchonized stop lights which the taxpayers voted for in the bond issue? Where the money? Where has the money been spent? How about some accountablity to the taxpayer.

It has already payed off. Look at all of the new private development taking place downtown. Once a city shows commitment to invest in there city private developers will follow.

Nobody wanted to go to downtown 5 years ago, I think that is not the case anymore, which I think is a good thing. All great cities have a vibrant downtown and I think we are on the path to having one in the next 5-10 years.

I certainly hope all the money being spent down there pays off for the city. Maybe the taxpayers will get a little relief.

Look at the money spent converting Fayetteville street into a pedestrian mall and back again to a street for cars.

I certainly hope all the money being spent down there pays off for the city. Maybe the taxpayers will get a little relief.
