Raleigh, N.C. — The 21st Century Transportation Committee on Thursday released its official plans for how the state should address its struggling roads.
The committee, created by the governor and the General Assembly, is proposing to stop the $172 million annual transfer from the Highway Trust Fund to the General Fund.
About $75 million of that money would go to the North Carolina Turnpike Authority for toll projects around the state. One of the top priorities is finishing Interstate 540/ N.C. Highway 540 in western Wake County. Construction could begin as early as this summer.
The remaining $97 million a year would be used to issue a $1.8 billion bond; the bond money would be used for interstates, public transportation, mass transit and bridge projects.
The transportation committee meets again to finalize its proposals on May 13, the same day the legislative session begins.

http://www.notollson540.org is the way to go. Pressure the NC Legislature to not push this through. The 21st Century Transportation Commission is some stupid official name to Governor Easley's croonies to make it "seem" like some other group is in support of their toll plans. Don't let an outgoing administration make this mistake for NC. Visit our "What Can I Do" page, ALL emails for NC Representatives and Senators are listed. Write them, tell them NO TOLLS!! http://www.notollson540.org

We need more posts about how the trust fun raiding is going right to the pockets of corrupt democrats, not the truth -- Republican Jim Graham took the "personal repsonsibility" to set aside funds to build roads and zero dollars to maintain them.

The article is misleading. The transfer is occurring from the Highway Trust Fund to the General ROAD MAINTENANCE Fund, not the General State Budget Fund. Both the road maintenance and highway trust funds get all their money from gas taxes (two separate gas taxes for two separate road funds). However, the cost of maintaining roads has gone up, so money is being taken from the 'new highways' portion of the gas tax and being put into the 'fixing existing roads' fund. You have a choice...1) bad roads, 2) fewer highways, or 3) higher gas taxes. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
