A Fayetteville man has been charged under a new state law aimed at curbing the theft of copper wire, authorities said Wednesday.

Glenn Junior Maynor, 41, of 2312 Indian Creek Drive, was arrested Tuesday and charged with injuring wires and other fixtures of telephone/telegraph and electric power companies.

The law making the theft a felony went into effect in December.

Investigators said Maynor cut copper wire from utility poles along Judson Church and Sunnyside School Roads on Tuesday. A concerned citizen reported seeing him carrying a bucket and wire snips and cutting the copper from the base of a power pole, authorities said.

Six months, or more, active time might keep him from doing this again.

Is copper the new "gold"? Where is this copper being sold and to whom? There must be a hefty price for it, for someone to go around and still it.

Is it being melted down and used for other products, what?

Identify theft is a felony. Being charged with a felony does not always mean prison time.

I hope they start making identity theft a felony too, all they get now is a slap on the wrist.

It is a shame that they have to inforce a felony for stealing copper wire. I am not saying it shouldn't be done, i am saying stealing is stupid.
