Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina Regional Future City Competition was held Saturday at the N.C. State University College of Engineering in Raleigh.

The competition is part of a non-profit engineering education program sponsored in part by the National Engineers Week Foundation.

The winning schools were as follows:

• 1st Place- Davidson IB Middle School (Davidson)
• 2nd Place- West Pine Middle School (West End)
• 3rd Place- Lumberton Junior High (Lumberton)
• 4th Place- West Cary Middle School (Cary)

In addition to overall awards, there were several winners in specific categories:

• Best Use of Energy – Northridge Middle School
• Best Transportation System – Calvary Christian School
• Best Environmentally Sustainable Design – A.L. Stanback Middle School
• Best Physical Model – West Cary Middle School
• Best Computer City Design – West Cary Middle School
• Best Essay/Abstract – Davidson IB Middle School
• Best Oral Presentation – West Pine Middle School
• Best Use of Building Materials – Quail Hollow Middle School

Cash prizes were awarded amounting to over $5,000.

The first place school, Davidson IB Middle School, will attend a week-long N.C. State Engineering summer camp and represent the NC region at the Future City National Finals in Washington, D.C., Feb. 18-20.

Future City is an engineering competition that challenges over 30,000 students from more than 1,100 schools nationwide to consider how to revitalize America’s cities.
