Henderson Wins $1M Affordable Housing Grant

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded Henderson a $1 million grant to include affordable housing in its redeveloped downtown, officials said Wednesday.

HENDERSON, N.C. — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded Henderson a $1 million grant to include affordable housing in its redeveloped downtown, officials said Wednesday.

Henderson is among three cities with populations of less than 50,000 grants to build affordable housing in town centers that are under rejuvenation. Oskaloosa, Iowa, and West Sacramento, Calif., were also awarded funding.

“HUD wants to help these communities add housing to the mix of its multimillion-dollar efforts to bring back these areas,” HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson said in a statement.

Henderson has already invested nearly $20 million in its downtown area, adding a new library, police center and senior housing complex and repairing infrastructure along Main Street. The city plans to use the HUD funding to convert vacant office space in eight buildings along Main Street into 33 low-income housing units. Building owners will invest another $900,000 to help with the development, officials said.
