Dix Property Future Is Focus of Raleigh Merchants' Forum

A forum in Raleigh on Monday will focus on what should be done with the Dorothea Dix property.

The Greater Raleigh Merchants Association is the sponsor.

Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker wants to renovate the existing hospital buildings when the state moves patients to a new facility in Butner and mnake the rst of the land a park.

A group called Friends of Dorothea Dix wants to transform the psychiatric hospital property into a destination park that it says will bring people to Raleigh.

The forum will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Raleigh City Council Chambers.

you can bet on one thing for sure...... whatever happens to the Dix property will certainly put money in developers pockets. I predict high rise housing for the wealthy.

Has anyone considered using some part(s)of Dix as a statewide evacuation site when diasters threaten? I know the Red Cross sets up shelters throughout locales, but if the threat is realized and the damage severe, the shelters cannot sustain large groups of ppl for extended periods of time. I'm not quite sure how it can be managed, but it seems a better choice for people should NC face a near-Katrina situation.

I am sure people will want to visit the establishment across the street. It's a no star hotel.
