The wife of a Pitt County minister listened helplessly Sunday as her husband was shot by a burglar in their Greenville home, according to a 911 call released Tuesday.

Pastor Jim Carr, who was also a van driver for Pitt Community College, was home with his wife, Vickie Carr, early Sunday when they heard a sound by the back door. Jim Carr went to check it out and crossed paths with a burglar, Vickie Carr told a 911 dispatcher.

He was shot at least once.

While she was on the phone, she said she wasn't sure if the gunman was still inside the home. At one point, she gave the phone to her husband.

"I'm hurting, and please hurry," he told 911.

When authorities arrived, Jim Carr was rushed to Vidant Medical Center, where he died a few hours later.

No arrests have been made and police have not released a description of the burglar. Jim Carr told 911 that he only saw one man, in his 20s, who was armed with a handgun.

A funeral for the pastor is set for Saturday in Charlotte.

@puzzled, your comment, "Don't sound happy [for a reason that I don't approve of]...That makes me angry."

Why are you telling us this? What are you planning to do about that? Is that how you change behavior in people? Veiled threats?

Even *if* I was happy for a reason that you don't like...what does that say about *your* allegiance to our Constitution and your "religion of love"...when you make such a veiled threat based on someone's free speech?

FWIW, if you make claims about patriotic or "sacred" values that you say you possess, you may want to actually follow those values. IMO.

Praying for this Pastor's family.

I am going to have to stop reading WRAL and go to more accurate, reliable news sources. Here the pastor is now dead and the headline still reads: "911 call: Greenville pastor shot by burglar" - glancing at JUST the headline one thinks he was shot and is perhaps ok, and still living. My condolences goes out for the family. I understand crime in Greenville is very bad, not often reported. Tragic.

Seems folks love the America that Christians settled and consequently developed with all the "goodies" - puzzled *** "The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretext, infringed." James Madison in a speech to congress introducing the Bill of Rights.

Don't sound happy that a person was murdered just because he was minister. That makes me angry.

I don't see any of that here... Fifteeninthemagandoneupthepipe August 22, 2012 1:09 p.m.

Read what I was responding to. It was not the story.
