ATF agent cleared in witness-tampering case
A judge on Tuesday dismissed a case against a federal agent who had been accused covering up an alleged sexual relationship with a woman involved in a cocaine investigation.
Posted — UpdatedMike Fanelly, an agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Raleigh, had been charged with two counts of witness tampering and one count of making a false statement.
Prosecutors dropped the false statement charge before the trial, and U.S. District Judge James Fox dismissed the other charges for lack of evidence after the prosecution rested its case.
A friend of the woman involved in the case wasn't able to identify Fanelly in court.
Fanelly, who has two decades of experience with the ATF, will keep his job, officials said.
