GARNER, N.C. — A driver trying to get on Interstate 40 in Garner on Monday hit a truck driver walking on the highway entrance ramp, authorities said.

Kenneth Terry Bottom, 46, of Apex, was delivering a replacement cab to a AAA Cooper Transport truck that had broken down at the Jones Sausage Road interchange at I-40 about 11:15 a.m., authorities said. He was trying to cross the highway and walked into the path of a Mitsubishi on the ramp, they said said.

Bottom was taken to WakeMed, where he was listed in critical condition.

No charges will be filed against the driver of the Mitsubishi, Josalyn Murphy, 23, of Raleigh, authorities said.

The crash closed one eastbound lane of I-40 for more than an hour as state troopers investigated the incident.
