Halifax home invasion suspect shot through body armor

Littleton, N.C. — Halifax sheriff's deputies are looking for the crooks who got away after a drug-related home invasion led to a shootout that left one man dead despite the body armor he was wearing.

The Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids reports (http://bit.ly/uGkzXV) three armed men burst into a home on Short Street in Littleton Wednesday night.

Sheriff's Lt. Bobby Martin says the home's resident fired back, killing Ricardo Harley, 20, and wounding a second intruder, Kayman Northington, 41. Northington faces first-degree burglary and other charges.

Martin says the robbery was drug-related but gave no other details.

He said the resident was protecting himself and his home and will not be charged.

The third intruder and a fourth robber who waited outside the home got away and are being sought.

Northington was on probation for a May conviction for possessing stolen goods and has multiple assault, larceny and breaking and entering convictions dating to 1987, according to state Department of Correction records. He has served a total of about two years in jail for 23 misdemeanor convictions in North Carolina and a single felony drug conviction in Virginia.

23 misdemeanors got him less that two years? No wonder he thinks it's a joke to steal for a living. Now he has recruited three other guys to get in on the act, and one of them has been killed. It is time to revisit the system, don't you think, and make sure that crime is punished with time and get rid of probation, which obviously does not work. The rest of society does not want nor deserve to have to put up with this element of evil. With the rural areas becoming more of a senior citizen population, there is a need for removal of these criminals. Build a place in the desert for them and let them rob each other. One less critter to deal with in the legal system. Now the other one should be charged with his friend's death as well so we can put him in a cell for a long time where he OBVIOUSLY belongs. Had they not gone into a criminal act together, they would BOTH be alive today. Charge co-defendants with the deaths of their buddies when things like this happen. They are MUCH more at fault than the homeowner.

djofraleigh - the fact that this was 'drug related' doesn't mean the guy at home can't defend himself.

Yeah but it also means he'll have to continue using his gun as long as he has that "stash" and thats the problem. My guess is this; if 4 people ranned in this guys house they knew he had "valuable goods" and they'll be back to finish the job.

And one more felon is off the streets permanently. Great work, especially since the criminal was wearing body armor! Need to charge the other 3 with murder in commission of a felony and lock them up forever. Glad the resident was able to defend himself, but don't understand what "drug related" really means. Did the resident have drugs and these folks were trying to steal them? Anyway, glad they got one!
