SANFORD, N.C. — Alcohol and speed are suspected in a wreck that killed a 25-year-old Sanford man Wednesday night, state troopers said.

Troopers said Jason Jackson lost control of a Honda Accord while going about 90 mph on a curve on Franklin Drive, near Bridges Road, around 8:30 p.m. The Accord crossed the center line of the road into the path of an oncoming Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Danny Smith, 59, of Sanford.

Smith swerved off the road to avoid the Accord, but the vehicles still crashed into each other, troopers said. The front of the Suburban hit the rear, driver's side door of the Accord, splitting the vehicle in half.

Jackson, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was thrown out of the car, troopers said. He died of his injuries at the scene.

Smith suffered minor injuries and was treated at Central Carolina Hospital.

Troopers said the speed limit in that area is 55 mph.
