HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A woman died Saturday morning when the car she was riding in wrecked on N.C. Highway 70 East near Hillsborough, state Highway Patrol officers said.

Jessie Sturms, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene after the car swerved off the road and hit a tree near Palmers Grove Church Road, authorities said. The wreck happened around 7 a.m. Saturday.

The driver of the Nissan Altima, 23-year-old Morgan Freeman, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals. She was in critical condition in the intensive care unit late Sunday.

Authorities said speed and alcohol were a factor in the wreck. No charges have been filed at this time.
