WILSON, N.C. — A suspected impaired driver swerved across a road and hit a Wilson police cruiser head-on late Tuesday, police said.

Kenneth Ray Boykin swerved across the center turning lane of Ward Boulevard, near Drexel Street, around 11:45 p.m. and into the path of the oncoming police cruiser, police said. Officer Kolly Burritt swerved to the left, but Boykin's Hyundai Sonata hit the front, passenger side of the officer's Ford Victoria.

Both Boykin and Burritt suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Wilson Medical Center.

Boykin, of 1901 Lenoir Drive, Apt. E7, was charged with driving while impaired, driving left of center and operating a vehicle with no insurance.

Burritt, who has been with Wilson police since 2000, was conducting a routine patrol before the wreck, police said.
