Dump truck driver charged after motorcycle wreck

Two people on a motorcycle were seriously injured Sunday afternoon when they collided with a dump truck on U.S. Highway 70 in Selma, police said.

SELMA, N.C. — Two people on a motorcycle were seriously injured Sunday afternoon when they collided with a dump truck on U.S. Highway 70 in Selma, police said.

Marvin Geovany Diaz-Veliz, a legal immigrant who was driving the dump truck, was charged with not having an operator's license and careless and reckless driving. Police said he pulled out of a gas station and crossed five lanes of traffic to get on to Interstate 95 South without yielding to the motorcycle.

The motorcycle driver, Charles Lee, 54, swerved to avoid the truck, but skidded into it at about 30 mph, police said. He and his wife, Cynthia, 56, both of Dunn, were taken to the hospital. Cynthia Lee was listed in critical condition Sunday evening.

Charles Lee's conditions was not released, but police said he was walking around at the scene despite his injuries.
