Former head of Raleigh Black Chamber pleads guilty to writing bad check

Dwayne Brandon Trainer admitted he wrote a bad check to chamber member Kim Burke to reimburse her for bailing him out of jail.

Trainer, 26, was pulled over for speeding on April 3 in Orange County. Law enforcement officers found that Trainer was wanted in another state on charges that he defrauded a woman whose family was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Burke paid $1,850 to get Trainer out of the Orange County jail.

Burke said Trainer tried to repay her by writing her a check from the chamber, but it bounced because of insufficient funds.

That charge sent Trainer back to jail, where he spent the past month. He remains in custody with more court dates set in Wake and Orange counties related to other fraud counts.

Burke said she was saddened and satisfied to see Trainer in jail.

"It was kind of sweet to be quite honest because after everything happened, that's the only reward that we get as chamber members. That's the only reward I got because he don't pay anybody back. He doesn't pay any of the chamber members back," she said.

Burke has taken over as the leader of the Raleigh Black Chamber of Commerce.
