FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police continued to search Wednesday for any connection between two shootings along Raeford Road early Saturday that left one teen dead and a second wounded.

Officers were called to Club Ciroc, at 6323 Raeford Road, at about 2 a.m. Saturday, after shots were fired outside the nightclub. Joseph Cason, 17, was shot in the leg, and he drove himself to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

About 15 minutes later, officers responded to a wreck at 6261 Raeford Road and found that William Trower, 18, had been shot in the head. He died at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Sunday.

Trower graduated last month from Pine Forest High School, where he was a standout football player. He planned to enroll at a junior college in California this fall.

Pine Forest High Principal Jane Fields and Trower's coach teammates described him as a good kid who always had a smile and encouraged others, and they said they don't know who would have wanted to harm him.

"We're all kind of in a state of shock," football coach Bill Sochovka said. "He really wanted people to like him, and they did,"

A memorial service Sunday night drew more than 200 people to the school. Trower's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

Darian Hogan, 18, of Odom Drive in Fayetteville , is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in connection with the nightclub shooting. He surrendered Monday night and was being held Wednesday in the Cumberland County jail under a $50,000 bond.

Investigators haven't determined a motive for either shooting, and they are trying to determine if the two cases are related. They haven't said whether Trower was at the club before he was shot.
