RALEIGH, N.C. — A father of three found dead in a Raleigh roadway early Sunday was hit by a vehicle while walking home from his sister's birthday party, relatives said.

Freddie Lane, 47, was run over and killed by a vehicle while crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, at Chavis Way, police said. His body was found around 2 a.m.

"He was somebody's son, he was someone's father, he was someone's brother, and he was someone's friend," his sister, Darnic Richardson, said.

She said Lane, who had three sons, decided to walk home from her birthday party Saturday night.

"He walked a lot. He never drove," Richardson said. "My mom got on him about walking at night. She didn't like for him to be walking late at night."

Police said that Raul Gutierrez-Leja, 18, of 1124-C Angelus Drive, was driving the vehicle that struck Lane.

Gutierrez-Leja told police that Lane was lying in the road when he hit him. Police said there are no indications that Lane was struck by any other vehicle and it's unclear why he was in the road.

"I think there is something going on with his story. He needs to be questioned some more," Richardson said.

Gutierrez-Leja was charged with driving while impaired, driving without a license and having an open container of alcohol in a moving vehicle.

He was given a $10,000 secured bond but also placed under a detainer, because authorities suspect he might be in the country illegally, court records state.

"Maybe this is the guy here, and he is just scared to admit that he did it," Richardson sad.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the wreck.
