HOPE MILLS, N.C. — What Chun Jones experienced the night her husband was shot to death outside their Cumberland County home can only be described as terrifying helplessness.

Chun Jones suffered from muscular dystrophy and was unable to walk. She listened from upstairs as her husband Walter left their house in the Gray's Creek community near Hope Mills in the early morning hours of July 24, 2003 to investigate a strange noise outside.

He never returned.

Walter Jones, a retired Army sergeant, was shot to death while Chun lay motionless in bed, powerless to help him.

"Why? I want to know why," she said in an interview shortly after Walter's death.

Cumberland County sheriff's deputies were called to the scene.

"(The officer) checked the perimeter of the residence. When he checked around back, he came around the body of Walter Jones," said retired Lt. Charlie Disponzio. "Based on evidence we did recover at the scene, it looks like one person was actually going to the house. A second perpetrator may have been close by in an awaiting vehicle."

Investigators set up checkpoints in the neighborhood and interviewed several people who worked for Jones' clothing business, but no one was ever charged.

Five years later, as her health was rapidly deteriorating, Chun granted NC Wanted one last interview in the hopes of finding her husband's killer while she was still alive.

"The pain is killing me," she said. "I don't think I could ever forgive."

Chun left the world knowing that her husband was waiting for her on the other side.

"I already see him... I feel safe," she said. "With this thing hanging over (me), I can't go on living life."

Investigators said Walter Jones was a true victim and they hope someone will come forward with information that leads to an arrest.

Anyone with information about the unsolved murder of Walter Jones can call NC Wanted's tipline at 1-866-439-2683 or submit a tip online.
